MALAYSIA
BOOK
OF
EXCELLENCE
Celebrating
50 years
of
excellence
From a
quiet
agrarian
economy
50 years
ago,
Malaysia
is now
at the
forefront
of the
economic
dynamism
transforming
Asia
into an
economic
powerhouse.
1n 1957,
the
agricultural
and
mining
based
economy
yielded
gross
domestic
product
of
RM12.8
billion
with 1
per cent
growth
rate.
Now, we
are the
34th
largest
economy
in the
world by
purchasing
power
parity
(2005)
with
gross
domestic
product
at over
RM277.3
billion
with
about 6
per cent
growth.
Central
planning
has been
a major
factor
in the
economy,
and
Malaysia’s
colossal
growth
is
expected
to
further
snowball
under
the
present
leadership
of Prime
Minister
YAB Dato’
Seri
Abdullah
bin Haji
Ahmad
Badawi.

The
strong
economic
push is
likely
to come
from
mega
projects
like the
Iskandar
Development
Region,
and the
development
of
biotechnology
and
agriculture-based
industries,
with
prospects
of
better
economic
and
diplomatic
ties as
Malaysia
negotiates
new free
trade
deals
that
will
open up
more
market
opportunities
and pave
the way
for
greater
trade
liberalisation.
It
is these
achievements
and
projections
for the
future
which
the
MALAYSIA
BOOK OF
EXCELLENCE
wants to
chronicle
for the
sole
purpose
of
posterity.
This
commemorative
book, to
be
published
in
conjunction
with
Malaysia’s
celebration
of its
50 years
of
Independence,
will
give an
overview
of the
country’s
progress
with
special
focus on
areas in
which
Malaysia
has
excelled.
